My experience of serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in China was a truly life-changing experience. It was a time of intense language learning, cultural integration, and Teaching. From the raw, fiery baptism of my first days to the fondness I have for my students, my time in China was an unforgettable experience. I was based at a university in Xindu, Sichuan Province, and was charged with helping students with their English and spreading a positive impression of American culture.
I quickly learned the importance of keeping an open mind and having a sense of humor when living in a new culture. I was also trained in how to lead language classes and had the opportunity to teach a group of 30+ college-aged students.
My students were incredibly motivated to learn, and I felt proud that I was able to make a positive difference in their lives. My experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in China was an invaluable lesson in cultural understanding and acceptance. I believe that these lessons are particularly important today, in a world that is becoming ever more interconnected.
