Teaching English in universities in Shanghai is many expats choice because they offer high salary and great benefits. Teaching in university is an unusual experience and highly rewarding. You can make friends with students and learn Chinese culture from knowledgeable professors. However, teaching in universities in Shanghai is hard as their requirements can be strict. It is excellent for your future career with a university in Shanghai on your resume. 

Daily life in universities when you teach in Shanghai is generally as follows:

1: Get up 7:00AM

Teaching in universities in Shanghai you can usually get up at 7:00 am, and then have your breakfast in the canteen on campus and some teachers live in campus but others not. If you live in campus you can go to the canteen to enjoy your breakfast. Universities usually offer you a single apartment; you can get up early and cook breakfast for yourself. For those who like doing exercise they will go to the school gym to do some excise before eating breakfast. 

2: Morning class

After breakfast, morning class begins at around 8:00am, some universities begin at 8:30 or 9:00am. The class is a little different from high schools or training centers, you usually need to prepare a PPT to begin your class and some times the whole morning is scheduled back-to-back English classes till 12:00pm or 12:30pm with no afternoon or evening lessons. One class will last 45 minutes or 1 hour. Teaching in universities is very normal to have double classes. After morning class if it is a bit early to have lunch, you can go back to your apartment have a rest or go to the office to prepare your PPT and afternoon’s class if you have one.

3: Lunch time

Teaching in universities in Shanghai, can enjoy your lunch on the campus café, the food is very local and more delicious than the food in middle schools and offers many kinds of food to choose from. Some campus in Shanghai offer western food as well. 

4: Afternoon class

Afternoon classes usually begin at 14:30pm and you will have one or two classes. Class size in university can be large with 30-50 students (some big classes will be up to 100 students). Daily teaching will end at 17:00 or 17:30. 

5: Your own time in the evening

University doesn’t require English classes at night but they have many activities, academic reports and speeches. Universities have many kinds of communities for teachers and students. If you want to learn calligraphy or folk dancing, you will always find a way to join in. Many expats choose teaching in universities as their first choice usually because teaching in universities can offer much more time to enjoy your own life and universities usually provide more opportunities for you to do so. You can use all the equipment which some small schools don’t have for free. 

Teaching in universities in Shanghai, after class you are free to do whatever you wish and are not generally scheduled for office hours.
