China is a very diverse country and you can have fun with many kinds of activities and travelling around China. China offers wonderful unique scenery as well as exciting outdoor activities and one of the most famous among expats is skiing!
When we talk about skiing, many people will immediately think of southern Austria or Switzerland. However, not everyone can afford to travel to a fancy Swiss ski resort. In fact, there are a lot of excellent, outstanding even, ski resorts to be discovered across China. Some of them even host international skiing and snowboarding competitions.
1: Huaibei international ski resort in Beijing
Huaibei international ski resort is one of the oldest ski resorts in Beijing and was founded in 2000. It is located in Huaibei district and near the Jiugukou nature scenic area. With excellent facilities and modern security, Huaibei international ski resort attracts millions of people to go skiing from December to March.
2: Nanshan ski resort in Beijing
Nanshan ski resort in another ski resort famous in Beijing, it is located in the south of Miyun district and is 267 hectares in size. It is about 1.5 hours by car from Beijing to the resort. The landscape of the resort is very natural and they provide advanced facilities, 21 ski slopes divided into advanced, intermediate and beginner levels so that it is easy to ski according to your ability and ensures the slopes are as safe as possible. The resort offers full Ski hire and lift pass packages costing around 130rmb per day on weekdays and 210rmb on weekends.
3: Alshan Skiing Resort in Inner Mongolia
The resort is divided into two parts: The West Hill Ski Terrain for ski racing and training; the East Hill Terrain for just plain fun. The West Hill Terrain is built in accordance with the standards for international ski racing, suitable for competition and training. It covers around 5.5 square kilometers area and offers plenty of activities and entertainment.
To get there fly from Beijing by air to Ulanhot, then take bus or train for 3-4 hours to reach resort.
4: Beidahu Ski Resort in Jilin
The Beidahu Ski Resort is China's most northeasterly province that borders North Korea and Russia. Beidahu is located 56 kilometers from Jilin City and about 128 kilometers from Changchun Longjia International Airport. You can take a flight from Beijing to Changchun, and then take a taxi for about 2 hours to get to the mountain. There are also buses there as well if you're travelling on a budget. Although, the bus is not too reliable so we recommend budgeting for a taxi.
The ski season starts from November through April. There are 6 trails and 6 lifts and generally the cost of skiing is cheaper than Beijing, also the weather is colder and there are far less people.
5: Yabuli Ski Resort in Heilongjiang
Yabuli ski resort located in the southwest of Yabuli County, 198 kilometers from Harbin. It is the largest ski resort in China and is also the best ski resort in terms of slopes, types of slopes, length of slopes and services. It has hosted a number of games, including all snow events of the 3rd Asian Winter Games.
The best time to visit the area is from November to March. The 11 slopes can meet the demands from beginner to advanced skiers. Average snowfall is 30-50 cm in the lower areas and about 100 cm at the top of the mountain. The resort offers various kinds of activities, bars, restaurants, a shopping mall, and an aid center as well.
