It has twists and turns, ups and downs, and unexpected surprises around every corner, much like a rollercoaster ride. You should be aware that the air quality in China can be problematic before you pack your luggage and board a plane.
It's probable that you'll cough a lot or experience difficulty breathing. Do not worry, though; it's all part of the adventure! Just make sure to pack those tissues and maybe even a gas mask or two (hey, safety first!). And let's not forget about the food; you must try the regional fare.
You can count on it to please your palate, I promise. Now, there are other factors to take into account besides air quality while deciding where to teach. You must be receptive, flexible, and eager to understand and respect a different culture. Although difficult, the benefits are enormous.
When researching potential cities, be sure to look into the air quality index (AQI) and the city's pollution control measures. Some cities have stricter regulations and more active efforts to reduce pollution, which means better air quality. And don't forget to consider the time of year - winter months in northern China can be especially brutal, but summer offers a breath of fresh air.
Last but not least, consider the location of your school. Schools in industrial areas or near major roads may have worse air quality, so choose wisely. Are you presently prepared to dedicate yourself to teaching English in China? It may not always be easy, but it will be an adventure you'll never forget.
